Overview
The new 275,000 square foot, eight-story National Security Sciences Building
at Los Alamos National Laboratory is to be the replacement for the
SM-43, a 45-year old Administration Building.
SM-43 is not configured to meet the
requirements of today’s high-speed communication, research,
and security systems. Most systems in the old building are inadequate
for
today’s needs and do not comply with current building code
standards, nor is it a reliable location for the Laboratory’s
high-tech, electronically dependent systems; and it is also more
expensive to operate than a modern building of similar size.
The
new building will provide efficient, modern, productive research
and office facilities. It will include a lecture hall and a new
multi-level 600-vehicle parking garage. Most important, the new
facility will provide a safe, reliable location for DOE’s
cyber-based weapons program with state-of-the-art cyber security
and electronic resources that will accommodate changes in priorities
and work flow. It is a $ 63.5 million Design-Build project and
is the third major design/build project performed by GARDNER
ZEMKE in the TA-3 campus in the past five years and is intended
for occupancy in 2006. |
