Overview Due to the downsizing
of several other squadrons at Holloman AFB, the German Air Force
increased its Tornado Training Unit from 12 to 42 aircraft.
Details This
project consisted of the installation of new site utility services
and the ground work
needed for a new parking apron capable of accommodating 45 tornado
jets. Six new 125’ poles light this area for nighttime sorties
and are monitored by a new closed circuit camera system with the
capacity for covering a 9,217,152 SF area. In addition, three new
hangars consisting of six individual hangar bays for the fueling
and storage of planes was constructed. A major 50HZ system was
needed to power the European style planes. Three converters (one
650 KVA, one 350 KVA, and one 225 KVA) were necessary and had to
be installed in a parallel fashion, making the installation more
complex.
A new maintenance hangar was placed directly behind
the hangars, and a 40,000 SF repair floor allows crews the capacity
of working
on six tornado jets at one time. This multi-floor complex also
includes a series of support offices and workshops capable of housing
a workforce of 100 support personnel.
Supporting the new maintenance
hanger is a jet engine fuel cell workshop. This 18,648 SF complex
is capable of repairing, rebuilding,
and testing four units at one time and has the capacity to store
four more engines during the reparation stage and houses approximately
50 support personnel. The Jet Engine Fuel Cell and the three
Parking Shelters are a fine example of the use of underground conduit
systems
in lieu of overhead conduit. The buildings have a low presence
of electrical systems visible throughout the facilities enhancing
the interior look of the buildings.
