Overview In August, 2003, GARDNER ZEMKE received notice of Award for the Stage 2 Mechanical and Electrical installation at the Durango Pumping Plant located on the South end of Durango, CO. The Durango Pumping Plant will be located on the East side of the Animas River and is designed to deliver 280 cubic feet per second (cfs) of Animas River water with a maximum lift of 511 feet, the 2.1 miles to the new Ridges Basin Dam, which has a capacity of 120,000 acre feet. The estimated construction cost for the overall project is close to $ 500 million. GARDNER ZEMKE will perform as major Subcontractor to WEEMINUCHE CONSTRUCTION AUTHORITY who will be the Prime Contractor to the BUREAU OF RECLAMATION for construction of the pumping plant, approximately 2.1 miles of buried 72” diameter steel pipeline, and the new Ridges Basin Reservoir.

Details GARDNER ZEMKE’S work will include the supply and installation of four (4) 5,000 HP 56 cfs pumping units, two (2) 2,500 HP 28 cfs pumping units, and two (2) 1,250 HP 14 cfs pumping units along with all associated manifold piping, motor operated valves, unit cooling water systems, compressed air systems, and motor control equipment. GARDNER ZEMKE will also install 72” and 84” diameter steel manifold piping in the plant and 72” and 84” cement lined steel line pipe outside of the plant for the suction and discharge piping. Other features include the supply and installation of two (2) overhead bridge cranes, an electric traction elevator, and a 39’ diameter spherical steel ASME pressure vessel for the discharge pipeline.

This project was a negotiated procurement, which is scheduled to begin in July 2004 and complete in October 2008. Our team also includes Subcontractors NIELSONS / SKANSKA for pipeline and steel manifold construction, CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON (CBI) for the 39’ diameter air chamber construction, and THE FLOWSERVE PUMP DIVISION for the pumping units and motors.
