Overview Grand Coulee Dam is located on the Columbia River about 90 miles west of Spokane, Washington. It was completed in 1942 and is one of the largest concrete structures ever built. This barricade, which raises the water surface 350’ above the old riverbed, is 5,233’ long and 550’ high. The project irrigation facilities are designed to deliver a full water supply to 1,095,000 acres of land previously used only for dry farming or grazing and today serves as a multipurpose facility providing water for irrigation, recreation, fish and wildlife, hydroelectric power production, and also flood control. The power facilities at Grand Coulee consist of a powerplant on both the left and right sides of the spillway on the downstream face of the dam. The Left Powerhouse contains three station service generators rated at 10,000kW and nine generators rated at 125,000kW.

Details This project consisted of furnishing and installing three single phase, two winding, 230kV / 132.8kV – 13.6kV, 50MVA, FOW, oil filled, conservator type generator step-up transformers complete with bushings and secondary power connections. The work also included the moving and disposal of two of three existing 36MVA single-phase transformers, disposal of 14,000 gallons of PCB contaminated oil and complete field-testing of the new transformers.

The new transformers were designed and manufactured by ELCO INDUSTRIES located in Ramat-Hasharon, ISRAEL.
