Overview
The work at Vandenberg Air Rorce Base varied greatly from installing impavement runway fixtures, to hoisting two 72,000-pound substation buildings into place, to building 2.7 miles of 12 kV, 715.5 kcmil, 3-conductor power line underneath an existing line. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers administered this work under an IDIQ contract.

Details
The following is a description of the many projects at Vandenberg AFB:

Repair Runway Lighting – This job involved replacement of 310,000’ of 5 kV FAA cable, 88,000’ of 600 volt wire and control cable, 32 elevated threshold fixtures, 304 inpavement runway end fixtures, 242 steady burn approach fixtures, and sequential flasher approach system.

Power Alley Phase I and II – This job consisted of replacing three 12 kV overhead lines with underground feeds, including 4,800’ of eight-way six-inch concrete encased ductbank, eleven 6 x 8 x 8 manholes, ductbank and concrete pads for three G & W SF-6 type switches. This entailed pulling in and the termination of over 100,000’ 250 / 500 MCM 15 kV cable and the demolition of close to three miles of 12 kV overhead line.

Repairs to Military Family Housing – The work completed on this project is the installation of disconnects to 61 residential pad-mount transformers, which will give the USAF maintenance personnel the ability to disconnect individually the power to 336 homes. Also completed is the pulling in of 12,800’ of 500 MCM 15 kV cable into existing manholes and ductbank, along with the demolition of an equal amount of 1 / 0 15 kV cable.

Replacement of Substation 10 A / B – The location of this project is a quarter mile from the Pacific Ocean. The job was to replace two 12,470 / 480 volt substations that were on the verge of failure due to damage from the saltwater environment, with new Square D substations enclosed in two buildings, each 16’ wide, 38’ long, 12’ tall and weighing 36 tons and each sitting on 3’ stem walls tied together by 4,000 amp bus duct.

12 kV UnderBuild Line – This is a companion project of the Power Alley jobs and the work consists of 2.7 miles of 12 kV, 715.5 kcmil aluminum, and three conductor powerline, built onto poles that support an existing 69 kV line. Also included are six 50’ tall, 6” riser poles, two road crossings, 2,100’ of ductbank, 20,000’ of 300 / 500 MCM 15 kV cable and the demolition of unneeded pole line and ductbank.

Replace Transformer at Substation A – This job involves the replacement of a 69 kV, 12.5 MVA power transformer at one of Vandenberg’s main substations.

Relocate 69 kV and Control Lines – This contract consists of eight miles of 69 kV, 740 kcmil aluminum, three conductor powerline, 128 wood poles varying from 45’ to 90’ in length, four steel towers each 120’ tall, 84,000’ of control cable, ground and guy wire. Equipment required to do this job was extensive as well. Cranes, track hoe, auger trucks, four-wheel drive pickups and bucket trucks etc.
