Overview
Sky Harbor International Airport, during 1999, was ranked as the 12th busiest in the country and 17th busiest in the world for passenger volume. The number of aircraft landing and departing the airport has also increased. With over 560,000 operations per year, Sky Harbor currently ranks as the 5th busiest in the country for takeoffs and landings.

As population growth in the valley has increased, so has the demand for airport services and has caused the airport to outgrow its facilities and impacted the ability to provide quality customer service. In an effort to improve customer service, the City of Phoenix Aviation Department undertook an aggressive expansion program. The north runway, one of 78 construction projects, was extended from 11,000’ to 12,000’ at the west end to allow for larger and heavier aircraft.

Details
This project involved the reconstruction of the existing North Runway at the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, including the installation of 150,000 lf. of duct bank consisting of approximately 470,000 ft. of 2” and 4” PVC conduit, 854,000 ft. of cable and 120 precast manhole / hand holes. Also included was the installation of all new runway lighting fixtures, runway directional signs and two complete runway NAVAID Systems. The work was performed 24 hours per day, seven days a week.
